Sreepuram English Medium High School and Jr. College, affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi, is owned and run by the Arch Diocese of Kottayam. It is a coeducational School with a student population of about 3000. However big it may be now, it had a very humble beginning.
The story of Sreepuram started in the year 1971 with the purchase of the land from the Sreepuram family through the initiative of His Grace Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry. For some time the land remained as it was. By and by, the need for starting an English medium school was felt as Kannur lacked good centers of education then. Moreover, there was a growing need for new schools to cater for the ever increasing population. So, after careful thinking and lots of prayers a decision was taken to start a school and to embark upon a long project to see to the gradual development of it to a full-fledged senior secondary school. The idea behind this decision was that once a child took admission in LKG he or she would not need to leave the school till the completion of senior secondary course. In a way it is correct to say that the school developed along with the kids admitted here. And when the first batch of students was ready to write their ISC examination, the school became a full-fledged senior secondary school.
Sreepuram is blessed in the sense that the Rev. Fathers who served it as managers took up their assignment with missionary zeal and at most dedication and commitment. The tenure of office by each of them saw the successful completion of a project or two. When they left the school it was better than they found it. The following fathers served the school as Managers: Rev Fr. Luke Pathiyil, Rev. Fr. Thomas Theranthanam, Rev. Fr. Philip Pannivelil, Rev. Fr. Mathew Mavelil, Rev. Fr. Stephen Jayaraj O.F.M, Monsignor Dr. Jacob Kollaparambil, Rev. Fr. Abraham Kalarickal, Rev. Fr. Thomas Animoottil, Rev Fr. Alex Akkaparambil, Rev. Fr. Boban Vattampuram and Rev Fr. Biju Tharayil. The six multi storeyed buildings including the lab-library wing and the auditorium were built under the supervision and guidance of these Rev. Fathers, depending upon the time they served at Sreepuram. These Rev. Fathers were prodigiously lucky as they got valuable guidance and advice from His Grace Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry and His Grace Mar Mathew Moolakatt. These two heads of the church, though away from Kannur, had an abiding interest in the development of Sreepuram and hence the fathers could feel secure. These Rev. Fathers had left a permanent imprint on the sands of time and their contribution would always be remembered.
A school does not become great simply because of its infrastructure. It becomes great when it consistently produces exemplary results. To achieve that the school needs a Principal who can lead the teachers as well as command the students. It is the Principal’s duty to regulate the academic and non academic activities of the school. Sreepuram has been fortunate to have some Principals who have considered work as worship. Their strenuous effort during the years they served Sreepuram yielded excellent result and when the baton of leadership was handed over to a new person, he or she found out that the work was cut out for him or her. Nearly all followed the beaten track with some necessary innovations that became imperative. The following Sisters who served as Principals, namely, Sr. Bercamans SJC, Sr. Jerome SVM, Sr. Thiophin SJC, Sr. Lissia SVM, Sr. Jossia SJC, Sr. Betty SJC, Sr. Juliet SJC, Sr. Lititia SVM, Sr. Thomsin SVM and Sr. Angel SVM had been bywords for dedication, commitment and conscientious effort, which helped the school to pass one milestone after the other successfully. The glory that the school has achieved over those years has been, to a certain extent, theirs also.
Sreepuram has been blessed with a team of dedicated and committed teachers who are always ready to put in their best for the welfare of the students. Right from the KG to Plus two we have teachers of exemplary caliber who maximize their effort for the all-round improvement of the students. We have always been getting cent percent pass with distinctions and first classes only. The architects of this laudable achievement are the teachers of the school. They are adept at motivating the students and their power of motivation has been singled out for praise both by the students as well as by their parents. Most of these teachers have many more years of active service lift in them to train and mould generations of students who may join the school in future years.
To any school, big or small, the student community is its vital ingredient of strength. Here at Sreepuram, we have about 3000 students, who come from different part of Kannur and it’s surrounding places. They belong to different religious groups and are of varying abilities. But to all of them the school is like home away from their respective homes.
There were and are among them students of very high potential, good at studies and good at co-curricular and extra curricular activities. Our just passed out student Sanusha Santhosh is a big hit in Malayalam and Tamil films now. Our old students Anjali and Ajmal Shah Kulathar have also acted in Malayalam films.
Over the last two to three years, after the arrival of His Excellency Mar Joseph Pandarassseril, Auxiliary Bishop of the Arch Diocese of Kottayam, a landmark decision was taken to shift the KG School and the KG Teachers Training College to it’s permanent site.
